Mulled wine is a simple holiday beverage that can be made ahead of time, stored and brought out for intimate holiday gatherings or put together while you cook your holiday meals.
In a large pot or crockpot cook ingredients on very low heat for 10 - 15 minutes:
1- 2 bottles of red wine
1 orange cut into wheels
1 apple cut into wheels
¼ cup of dried fruits to add additional sweetness and complexity
8 allspice pods
8 cardamom pods
2 cinnamon sticks
2 star anise
Add sugar, honey or maple syrup to taste and serve in a heat resistant mug, garnished with citrus or a cinnamon stick.
In Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine this is a digestive and spirit lifting formula, perfect for festivities and eating during the colder parts of the year.
Cloves or Ding Xiang are very warming and good for the digestion
Allspice or Duo Xiang Guo is an anti inflammatory and mood lifting herb
Cardamom or Sha Ren is also warming and aids digestion
Cinnamon or Ruo Gui is warming, regulates sugar and improves circulation to the whole body
Star Anise or Ba Jiao Hui Jiang is also warming, uplifting and may have anti-flu properties.
For those who do not drink or want to avoid alcohol, these same fruits and herbs can be added to a strong brew of your favorite black teas or to warm juice like apple or pomegranate.
