There are many reasons to use contraception including hormonal health and cancer prevention in those with a strong genetic disposition. There are also reasons to avoid contraception or at least seek additional supplementation if you choose to use oral contraception.
The Pill May Inhibit Muscle Growth:
A research study has shown that women taking the contraceptive pill may have a lower muscle response to resistance exercise than those not taking the pill. The results were reported at the American Physiological Society meeting as part of the Experimental Biology 2009 scientific conference in New Orleans. Read more here.
Oral contraceptives: effect of folate and vitamin B12 metabolism.
Women who use oral contraceptives have impaired folate metabolism as shown by slightly but significantly lower levels of folate in the serum and the erythrocytes and an increased urinary excretion of formiminoglutamic acid. The vitamin B12 level in their serum is also significantly lower than that of control groups. Read the full paper here.
