Exercises Can Reduce Neck, Shoulder Pain of Women Office Workers

Many people suffer from neck and upper back pain.

At Sustain Community Acupuncture a majority of our patients come to us seeking relief from pain.  Whether chronic or acute all pain in Chinese medicine can be seen as a stagnation or accumulation in the affected area.  Through the use of simple distal needling techniques and the use of herbal supplements and liniments we have a very high success rate in reducing the pain and improving the mobility and comfort of our patients.  Acupuncture seems to work best when patients add simple stretching routines and moderate exercise into their daily lives.  Here are two study reviews that point to the importance of physical exercise.

A study published in December 2009 finds that exercise reduces the risk and effects of neck and shoulder injuries.

“Strength training exercises using dumbbells can reduce pain and improve function in the trapezius muscle, the large muscle which extends from the back of the head, down the neck and into the upper back. The exercises also improve the muscle’s ability to respond quickly and forcefully among women suffering trapezius myalgia, a tenderness and tightness in the upper trapezius muscle. The results are the latest findings from an ongoing Danish study aimed at reducing repetitive strain injury caused by office work.”

Strength Training Of Neck Muscles Relieves Chronic Pain

“Neck pain has been steadily increasing over the past two decades and is now second to back pain, the most common musculoskeletal disorder. Women are more likely than men to suffer from persistent neck pain, in particular those who engage in repetitive tasks such as working at a computer keyboard. Previous studies have shown conflicting results as to whether or not exercise can effectively treat neck pain, but there has not been enough high-quality research in this area to draw firm conclusions. A new study on women with neck pain found that specific strength training exercises led to significant prolonged relief of neck muscle pain, while general fitness training resulted in only a small amount of pain reduction.”
