How to stop smoking – part 2

by admin on March 5, 2010

Stopping Smoking, Why acupuncture really works.

In her article “How to stop smoking, naturally,” Dia Wong L.Ac. outlines the simple and natural method to stop smoking with acupuncture in as little as 4 days.

The role of acupuncture in nicotine cessation isn’t limited to reducing cravings. Acupuncture has also been proven to promote relaxation and better sleep, two major symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.  Moreover, acupuncture can be used to treat many disorders associated with smoking, such as damage to the bronchial, pulmonary and cardiovascular systems and the symptoms from nicotine withdrawal. There are many factors that effect the effectiveness of acupuncture.  These factors, include the length of time the patient has been smoking, their overall health, and the frequency of treatment. In many cases, the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association or NADA acupuncture protocol is used to help the patient maintain control and reduce cravings.

Scientific Literature, key points from recent publications:

In a study of 46 smokers who averaged 20 cigarettes a day for 23 years found that acupuncture helped many of them quit completely. Read more [here].

A 4 week clinical trial of 238 smokers concluded that acupuncture decreased the amount of cigarettes smoked and the desire to smoke. Read more [here].

Another study showing that acupuncture was significantly more helpful than a placebo in helping people quit smoking. Read more [here].

Cupping Therapy for Carpel Tunnel

by admin on March 3, 2010

Cupping Therapy Alleviates Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Pain

A German study published in The Journal of Pain showed that an external suction technique mainly used outside the U.S., called cupping, is effective for providing temporary relief of pain from carpal tunnel syndrome (CPS).

Researchers from Immanuel Hospital Berlin randomly divided fifty-two CPS patients into treatment and control groups. The treatment group was given wet cupping therapy in which cupping glasses are applied to skin overlaying the trapezius muscle following 5 to 10 skin punctures with a sterile lancet. A partial vacuum is created by electromechanical or manual suction within the cupping glass after it is applied to the skin.

Patient tolerated the treatments very well. In clinical practice, cupping can be performed conveniently and repeatedly. The authors noted that further studies are needed to assess the long-term value of cupping therapy for treatment of CPS pain.

Sustain Acupuncturists are trained in multiple cupping techniques that can be used by themselves or in conjunction with acupuncture and herbal therapies to alleviate the pain and dysfunction caused by carpel tunnel syndrome.

Acupuncture Relieves Pelvic Pain During Pregnancy

Acupuncture and strengthening exercises help relieve pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy and are effective complements to standard treatment, finds a study published online by the BMJ today.

Pelvic girdle pain is a common complaint among pregnant women worldwide, but no cure exists.

Researchers in Sweden identified 386 pregnant women with pelvic girdle pain. Women were randomly divided into three groups; one received standard treatment (a pelvic belt and a home exercise programme), another received standard treatment plus acupuncture, and the third received standard treatment plus stabilising exercises to improve mobility and strength.

Dealing with ‘falling apart’

by Sustain Staff on February 23, 2010

From PsychCentral.com is a six step program helping individuals cope with situations that makes them feel like their life is falling apart.

From reading a book to believing in your self, there are many natural ways of dealing with depressing situations. Number three on Patty James’ ‘Essential 6-Step Program‘ is getting help. In this section she recommends a calm walk, a therapeutic massage, and even acupuncture.

Acupuncture has been known to be highly effecting in relaxing individuals. With community acupuncture particularly, individuals are treated alongside other patients in a comfortable lounge setting. With an acupuncturist in the room, as well as other patients, this creates a sense of collective healing for everyone.

Learn to deal with ‘falling apart’ a natural and healthy way, your body deserves it!

Acupuncture and reducing stress during pregnancy

by Sustain Staff on February 18, 2010

A recent study from the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine showed that acupuncture is an effective treatment for depression during pregnancy.

Depression can harmfully effect a mother and her unborn child. 20% of women experience depression during pregnancy, and little research is dedicated to developing treatments for this. Thankfully, a recent research showed that women who received acupuncture had a greater decrease in their depression.

To read more about the study, read the article from the Examiner here.

Many people suffer from neck and upper back pain.

At Sustain Community Acupuncture a majority of our patients come to us seeking relief from pain.  Whether chronic or acute all pain in Chinese medicine can be seen as a stagnation or accumulation in the affected area.  Through the use of simple distal needling techniques and the use of herbal supplements and liniments we have a very high success rate in reducing the pain and improving the mobility and comfort of our patients.  Acupuncture seems to work best when patients add simple stretching routines and moderate exercise into their daily lives.  Here are two study reviews that point to the importance of physical exercise.

A study published in December 2009 finds that exercise reduces the risk and effects of neck and shoulder injuries.

“Strength training exercises using dumbbells can reduce pain and improve function in the trapezius muscle, the large muscle which extends from the back of the head, down the neck and into the upper back. The exercises also improve the muscle’s ability to respond quickly and forcefully among women suffering trapezius myalgia, a tenderness and tightness in the upper trapezius muscle. The results are the latest findings from an ongoing Danish study aimed at reducing repetitive strain injury caused by office work.”

Strength Training Of Neck Muscles Relieves Chronic Pain

“Neck pain has been steadily increasing over the past two decades and is now second to back pain, the most common musculoskeletal disorder. Women are more likely than men to suffer from persistent neck pain, in particular those who engage in repetitive tasks such as working at a computer keyboard. Previous studies have shown conflicting results as to whether or not exercise can effectively treat neck pain, but there has not been enough high-quality research in this area to draw firm conclusions. A new study on women with neck pain found that specific strength training exercises led to significant prolonged relief of neck muscle pain, while general fitness training resulted in only a small amount of pain reduction.”
